Collins Emergency Preparedness Procedures

Collins Emergency Preparedness Procedures

The first responsibility of the school staff in an emergency is the safety and health of your child. Collins School has an emergency plan in place, a staff that is well trained and well equipped to carry out rescue, provide first aid, sanitation and other support. During the year, we will have monthly fire drills and a yearly emergency evacuation drill. Students will learn how to react, where to assemble, and what to expect in an emergency situation. The following procedures are designed to insure student safety and reduce parental anxiety in the event of an emergency.

In the event of an evacuation emergency, the staff and students at Collins Elementary will:
  • “Drop, Cover and Hold”
  • Evacuate with classroom emergency bags to the field
  • Set up a Command and Communication Center
  • Identify students that are missing or injured
  • Activate search and rescue procedures/triage and first aid
  • Organize for the care and/or release of students

Information about Student Release:
  • No students will be released until at least 15 minutes after the onset of the emergency. This allows staff to assess damage and activate our emergency procedures.
  • No student will be dismissed from school unless a parent or individual designated by the parent on the emergency information card comes for him/her. Since only parents/authorized adults are allowed to pick up a student during an emergency, it is imperative that each student's Enrollment/Health card is updated with recent information.
  • All parents or designated persons who come for students must sign out the children at the Student Release area on the field. Signs will be posted at the entrance of the school if an alternate location for the release of students is required.

At Student Release:
  • Please patiently wait in line as you are given the Student Release form to fill out your child’s name, classroom number, your name and relationship to the child. You need to fill out a separate form for each child you are picking up
  • Present this form/s to the Student Release staff member at the table. The information on this form will be verified against the child’s ID/Health card before the child is handed over to the parents/authorized adult.

We do ask for your help in the following areas:
  • Please DO NOT CALL the school – we must have the lines open for emergency calls. Additionally, there may not be anyone in the office.
  • The school access route and street entrance areas must remain clear for emergency vehicles.
  • Turn your radio to KCBS (am 740), KLIV (am 1590) or other radio news stations for information and directions.
  • When you arrive at the campus, follow the directions of the school staff and PLEASE BE PATIENT! We are responsible for every student and must be allowed to account for each student to insure safety for all.
  • Please consider coming to the school and volunteering your services to help in the case of an emergency. Look out for the Volunteer Desk that will be setup. You will be asked to sign in and directed to where you could help.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION AND ASSISTANCE!
